A-Rod to the...

Yankees? Wow, I didn't see that coming. I thought for sure that he would end up in LA either with the Angels or the Dodgers. He's not getting that much of a raise either - $27.5MM/year (about $2MM more). His opt out really hurts the Yankees though since they are out $21 million from the Rangers.

Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees have agreed to the outline of a record $275 million, 10-year contract, a deal that potentially would allow him to earn millions more if he sets the career home-run record.

The amount of the guaranteed money was revealed by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn't been finalized. A-Rod and his wife met Wednesday in Tampa, Fla., with brothers Hal and Hank Steinbrenner, but the parameters of the agreement were set in place last weekend.

"The meeting was a final get-together," Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said. "He wanted to make sure myself and my brother knew that he was sincere and serious."

The Yankees still must draft the agreement with Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras. Asked whether the only remaining details were putting the deal on paper, Steinbrenner responded: "pretty much so."

Boras wasn't a part of the negotiations, in which Goldman Sachs managing directors John Mallory and Gerald Cardinale conducted shuttle diplomacy.

"They were the go-betweens, initially," Steinbrenner said. "That's how he reached out to us."

Of course I like that the Yankees are on the hook for the full amount now, plus I think they are hit worse with the luxury fee. I think Rivera will accept their 3/45 deal too, add in Jeter's contract, and you have 3 players earning more than most team's payrolls.

It's very plain to see. He likes it here, the Yankees are always in contention for a World Series and the fans love him.

I would have loved for the Phils to get him, but he made the right choice. In ten years he's going to have won three World Series, three more MVPs, and will be the all time home run champion.

That said...god I hate the Yankees.

He wanted to stay in NY
In all likelihood, Mrs. A-Rod wanted to stay in NY
He and Jeter are buds
He wants a Ring™ - badly.
And now he's got 10-years on a team that is going to contend for the WS, and is a virtual lock for the play-offs, every year

Plus, it's not as if he's going to be hurting at $27.5M per year - even with NY taxes

Jeter and A Rod arent the closest of pals. When Jeter was given the opportunity to say that the Yanks should keep A Rod, he declined to do so.

I really dont think that he wanted to stay in NY above all else. NY just offered him the most money. LA and the LAA didnt offer him anything close to the money NY offered. Scott Boras miscalculated a little on the market.

A sidenote though, the contract supposedly has a clause in it that A Rod will share in the profits of his all time HR Chase. I dont really understand how that works, but I do know that Bud has to approve it, and when the rumor was that the Cubs were gonna sign him and allow him to buy into the franchise, Bud said he wouldnt allow it. So it must be seen if he will even approve the contract, if its real.

Tom Hicks is happy though.

Anyways...Rivera wants 4 years at 15 per, which is why he hasnt accepted the Yankees offer yet. Also, did you see they offered Lowell a contract worth 56-60 million? Gotta spend that Clemens money I guess.
