Host of 'Leonard's Losers' dies at 78

ATHENS, Ga. -- Leonard Postero, who predicted the losers of college and pro football games on a syndicated radio program called "Leonard's Losers, died last week. He was 78.

The Athens native died Friday of congestive heart failure at Athens Regional Hospital. His funeral is scheduled for Tuesday.

Postero, known on the air as Leonard Postosties, predicted scores for 41 years and boasted an overall accuracy rate of 80 percent on college games and slightly less -- 72 percent -- for pro games.

"His main thing was not having to be correct, but to put a smile on somebody's face," said his wife, Elke Postero.

Postero graduated from the University of Georgia in 1943 and planned to be a doctor, but joined the Navy during World War II and served as a pilot and flight instructor. After the war, he returned to Athens and started an insulation company with his father.

"People listen to me because they like to listen to the way I say it," Postero once said. "They don't really care if I'm right or wrong. It's just a hell of a lot of fun, and for that I'm grateful."

Postero's first show aired in 1958, and he spent most of his time after that selling the show across the country. At its height, it was broadcast on more than 1,400 stations, including Armed Forces Radio.
