Posted at 8:17am on Apr. 28, 2008 Monday Makes the Play

By Repair Man Jack

It was April of 1976; Rick Monday hadn’t played his first inning yet as an LA Dodger. At the time, he was a Center Fielder for the visiting Chicago Cubs and was in town to do as much damage to the opposing team as possible. He wasn’t planning on being serenaded by the fans in sunny Southern California.

However, two rowdy fans had brought a US flag to the ballpark, and were planning on celebrating the bicentennial in as obnoxious a manner as possible. Monday describes what happened next.

By Red Wing

I was at the UCSB Gaucho vs. (My beloved SC) Trojan game Saturday in SB.

And no we didn't fair well against a good Gaucho team, admittedly.

There was one kid I thought I'd let you know about at UCSB.

His name is Chuck Huggins, he is a LHP stud! He pitched a shutout and almost a no hitter against us Sunday.

He's a senior and a good prospect to keep your eye on.

Just FYI...

I was going to go with Lassy Shot, but that would have conveyed the wrong tone.

ISIAH HAS BEEN LET GO. MERCIFUL LORD, WE THANK YOU!

You and Donnie Walsh. And whoever destroyed the photos Isiah had of Dolan. That guy, man, that guy rocks.

"I feel like some of the bigger events that happened on the way with Isiah have overshadowed some of the good things he's done for the franchise." Walsh said.

What good things?

"I just believe a new voice, a new coach, is necessary to change the direction of the team," Walsh said. "This is a coveted job. People want to coach here."

Posted at 4:53pm on Apr. 8, 2008 Buckner Returns to Fenway

By lesliecarbone

They asked him whether he'd ever contemplated suicide. They speculated on whether he should leave New England. They reduced a fine baseball career to one brief tarnished moment, the moment when Mookie Wilson's ground ball rolled through his legs. The error wasn't even decisive for that 1986 World Series: It occurred in the sixth game, and only tied the Series 3-3. It was the seventh game that ended the Boston's World Championship hopes, again. But as the media presented it, over and over again, it was the decisive moment of Bill Buckner's career.

Twenty-one and one-half years after that awful moment, Bill Buckner returned once more to Fenway Park, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at today's home opener, after the team received their 2007 World Series rings. He seemed like he didn't know what to expect, but the crowd loved it, standing and cheering him loudly as he threw a strike to his former teammate Dwight Evans. "It was hard to do, for me," he said later, and he welled up when he spoke about coming to "forgive ... the media for what they put me and my family through".

Posted at 4:13pm on Mar. 25, 2008 Bonds, meet blackball

By Alberta

This is just silly. The guy can mash. Do you know who the mariners use at DH? Jose 'I havent been good since I was an expo' Vidro. JOSE FREAKING VIDRO!!!!

If you accept the argument that teams are not signing Bonds because he is a cancer in the locker room, he will bring the steriod stink around, the fans will revolt, ect. then I got some beachfront property in Montana to sell you.

If your into sabermetrics: 10 runs roughly equal 1 win. How many more wins would seattle have with Bonds at DH instead of Vidro? Answer: THEY WOULDA MADE THE PLAYOFFS

Im not a mariners fan, but I am a fan of organizations doing all they can do to win games. Bonds for 10 million is a no brainer. Could you imagine this guy with Tampa? Him and Pena and Crawford together and you have a lineup all of a sudden.

Posted at 10:05pm on Mar. 15, 2008 Tigers thump Duke, target Tar Heels for first ever ACC tourney title

By gamecock

The Clemson Tigers tamed tornado warnings in the semi-finals of the ACC tournament at Bobcats Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina today, before taming Duke's Blue Devils after 22 straight losses to the Coach K.

Now can they tame what Sandlappers (South Carolinians) call, the "North Carolina Conference" for the first time?

Trevor Booker scored 18 points, Cliff Hammonds added 17 and Clemson, the perennial pushover in the Atlantic Coast Conference, stunned No. 7 Duke 78-74 on Saturday to reach the tournament title game for the first time in 46 years.

Below is the first Box Score that matters. People, this is what life is about, i.e. daily box scores.

Baseball will be played in Heaven for eternity. Why? No time clock. One must get 27 outs, at least. (No rainouts in Paradise, hence one must always get 27 outs.) No runing out the clock like in those other "sports." One must have hand and eye coordination. Brute force and speed alone won't cut it in Baseball.

The Grapefruit League outcome could have been better at Vero Beach, Florida, but life has begun again and it's an exhibition anyway!

Posted at 8:41pm on Feb. 26, 2008 Commodores need to beat Volunteers

By gamecock

I admit some prejudice toward the team from Obnoxville. My DeVine relatives are from Northern Alabama, one cousin of which is my best friend. Of course, they hate Tennessee more than the Gray ever hated the blue.

Secondly, a Vanderbilt victory would help to enhance the SEC's reputation in a very down year.

Thirdly, it would be yet another victory for the geek school that combined its athletic program with intramurals several years ago. That move brought a lot of ridicule, yet the overall quality of Commodore sports has greatly improved, even in the MAIN sport as religion, i.e. Football.

Posted at 4:25pm on Feb. 15, 2008 Charles Barkley, complete fool.

By Alberta

I dont know if anyone caught Chuck on CNN (situation room) telling Wolf he hates conservatives ('Conservatives make me sick') and that all Republicans are 'fake christians.'

I bring this up only because I got to wondering if Curt Schilling (just off top of head) had gone on TV and said liberals make him sick and they are all godless heathens, if the response would be so muted. Furthermore, would a TV station allow a republican minded sports athelete to even give his political opinion at all?

Anyways, people make fun of Coulter because she says wild things. In my opinion, Barkley is doing the same.

Posted at 8:19pm on Feb. 14, 2008 NCAA football rules changes: some ok, some stupid

By Finrod

I rarely go to ajc.com any more (long story); but I happened to run across this article about changes to the NCAA football rules:

In an attempt to produce more plays and points in a shorter game, the rules committee went back to the drawing board and on Wednesday recommended a few changes for the upcoming season.

Okay, let's see what they came up with.

Posted at 3:16pm on Feb. 2, 2008 A Tough Choice

By nerogates

Super Sunday proceeds Super Tuesday. For most Americans that is the natural order of things. My better half and I are huge sports fans. Tomorrow is a Do Not Disturb Day for us from about two in the afternoon until the final gun.

There are several reasons to root for, or against, both teams. I am a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan. Two weeks ago the Ghosts of Lambeau were vanquished by mortal Giants. The Frozen Tundra sprouted an upset for the ages. This time the Giant went up the beanstalk. I could stay loyal to the NFC, tradition, and geography (I'm only a half-dozen exits away from The Meadowlands).

Chris MF Bosh and the Toronto Raptors of the MFNBA do everything they can possibly do to lose to the Big Bad Boston Celtics, including giving up 19 turnovers and getting out rebounded at both ends of the floor. It dont matter, not when you can score more then Jamie Lynn Spears at an R Kelly concert.

Posted at 8:04pm on Jan. 13, 2008 The New York Football Giants

By hoyasaxa

The New York Giants are in the NFC title game. I honestly have no idea how we won that game. I'm sitting on my couch stunned.

I'm enjoying every tear out of Wade Phillips' fat face right now. I can't wait to see Terrell and Romo explain this one away. This is absolutely delicious. I really don't like that star.

I can't believe we're going to Lambeau next week.

LET'S GO GIANTS!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
